Cass Bird

WHO: Photographer Cass Bird
WHY SHE’S FOXY: Because not only is she a mother of two who can breakdance on command, she is also a kick-ass photographer whose raw, romantic style has captured the zeitgeist in the spirit and faces of everyone from Cate Blanchett to Jay Z.

ON HER MEETING HER PARTNER: “There are two stories. Hers is that I walked into a Social Studies class in college and the room slowed down. Mine is that I had a girlfriend at the time, and I never looked at women who were under five foot nine, so I didn’t notice her. But then she choreographed a ‘Celebration of Sisterhood’ dance and I went and was like: ‘That girl knows how to back up her ass. She’s hot.’”

ON HER COMMITMENT CEREMONY: “We got our license at City Hall six years ago, I had no money so I just wore pants and a button-down. Ali wore a white Philip Lim dress. Afterwards we went to dinner at Brown on the LES and stayed at the Bowery Hotel. We were SO excited and felt totally connected, like we were in it together.”

ON CREATIVITY AND WOMEN: “I love taking pictures of women that represent human strength and bravery to me, that female/feminine superpower. Daria Werbowy is my muse and dream subject. I would love to curate a shoot with Beth Ditto, Catherine Keener, Cate Blanchett and Julia Res, this beautiful androgynous soul spirit who is super comfortable with fluidity and femininity and masculinity. The closer you get to her, the more beautiful she gets.”

ON INTIMACY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: “It’s the only time I know I’m on the right page. I just feel it. My baseline is to connect with my subject, to see them and let them see me. The few times I don’t feel it is when a person hides from me or themselves. I’m a lover. I want to love and appreciate my subjects and vice versa. My expectation is love and connection.”

ON HER DREAM WEDDING: “I’m not that kid that grew up thinking about weddings ever. I was that kid that felt insecure and unstable around commitment. But I would like to attend the make-believe wedding of Bill Henson and Diane Arbus — and I would take Jay Z as my date, wear a sexy suit and spend the after-party dancing to Biggie Smalls.”

LOVE MOVIE: “‘Pete’s Dragon’ — it’s about a a dragon that protects a boy until he finds his way into a loving home.”

ON BECOMING A PHOTOGRAPHER: “It’s all about figuring out what you’re trying to say. In order to do that you have to figure out who you are and what you love.”

ON MARRIAGE AND BEIBER: “The secret to staying married is… staying married. In the wise words of Justin Bieber: ‘the grass is greener where you water.’”
