Bling It On

Designer Melanie Kamsler, 1/2 of the power duo behind MANIAMANIA — the iconic, mystical jewelry line that graces everyone from Jemima Kirke to Lizzie Jagger — on engagement rings, Antonioni and running an Australian-based business from NYC.

On Her Line Of Jewelry MANIAMANIA: "It's a word we created to convey a sense of obsession, wonder and otherworldliness. We love unusual stones with unique inclusions, and antique-style cuts such as rose-cut, old miner, single cut, which give the pieces a heirloom quality, a collectable look and uniqueness.  We love our champagne rose-cut diamonds because they have such a beautiful neutral color tone that sits well with everything and the soft kaleidoscopic look of the rose-cut top facets is so dreamy. I'd love to see our pieces on Anita Pallenburg in the Keith Richards era."

On How To Choose An Engagement Ring: "You should go with your intuition. But you also want to be practical and consider your personal style. If you have a classic, minimalist vibe, go with something petite and versatile. If you have a more bohemian style, consider our Ritual ring, or antique Georgian jewelry Some of our favorite pieces are from Memento Mori Jewelry."

On Collaborating With Her Business Partner Tamila: "We originally worked together for at a fashion magazine called Russh, and both wanted to do another project together. We were both avid, obsessed jewelry collectors — one thing led to another and we created Maniamania. Our style muses are Anita Pallenburg, Marianne Faithfull, Uschi Obermeir, Patti Smith, Vali Myers, Marchesa Luisa Casati, Theda Bara, LouLou De La Falaise, Bianca Jagger, and Stevie Nicks."

Favorite Books + Movies:  "Bertolucci, Antonioni, Godard, Fellini and Wim Wenders films will always inspire me. 'Franny and Zooey' is one of my favorite books, and lately I’ve been reading Joan Didion’s 'The White Album' and 'The Master and Margarita'."

On A Typical Work Day: "Smoothie, coffee, answering emails. Then dealing with customers orders in the Jewelry district: sourcing stones, and checking in with our setters and production team. Early evenings are often spent in conversation with Tamila and our team in the Sydney office, the time difference is crazy but we have somehow made it work!"
