Josie Miner, mother of three, is a self-described "non-wedding" wedding photographer. She’s more well known for her fashion work: She recently shot the latest Pamela Love campaign and is off to Paris next month to capture Proenza Schouler's latest collection.
But her unique cinema verite style is perfectly suited to capture the creative nuances of her laid-back, high-fashion clientele, whether it’s a Mexican wedding beach blowout or an intimate Napa Valley ceremony. “When I’m shooting weddings,” she says, “the goal is to keep the mood light, festive, and fun.”
Here, Miner shares her favorite photos from nine different weddings, including the first she ever shot.
Gillian Steinhardt and Serkan Ozkaya in Istanbul
“They’d just gotten off of a water taxi and were walking through a garden to Sabanci Museum. He’s a visual artist from Turkey, and she’s a Canadian jewelry designer — the ceremony was both in Turkish and English and took place, as did the dinner party, on a tiered veranda overlooking the Bosphorus River.”
Courtney and Taavo Somer in Upstate NY
“The procession was kind of meandering and poetic. Cocktails were up at their house overlooking a pond and field that abutted a forest. Here the groom and a few of his friends were walking through tall grass towards the forest. Everyone organically followed them down a path through tall grass to a small clearing in the woods that was strewn with ribbons where they had the ceremony."
A summer wedding in Napa Valley
“This was the end of the night of day two and we were exhausted and on our way back to the hotel at three in the morning and as we were driving away from the vineyard I saw the venue lit up in the side-view mirror and made my assistant stop the car and help me set up the tripod and took this very long exposure."
Anna and Jacob in Rhinebeck, NY
“They got married near Rhinebeck in this old, quaint chapel. This image captures the post-ceremony bliss as we all followed them to the reception.”
Hillary and Mo Koyfmann in Vermont
"This wedding was in a barn in rural Vermont. I love girls with their girls in their Converse on their wedding night under a disco ball in a barn. Everyone was having a blast."
Erin Moone and David Scott in Napa Valley
“This image is from the very first wedding I shot. After the ceremony, the groom wipes the forehead of his best man as they’re standing on the patio overlooking the vineyard at the bride’s family home.”
