Creative Director + Stationery Extraordinaire Carla Fahden on the art of the old school wedding invitation.
Why Stationery? I love painting, drawing and making pretty things but also love the business aspect of interacting with clients and running a small company. Wedding stationery design is the perfect balance of these two things. When I first got started, I worked with quite a few bridezillas who wanted to mash five different designs into one and wanted me to figure out how to do it. Over the years I’ve honed in on my aesthetic and only offer invitation designs that I would be excited to send to my own guest list. The fact that my collections are all pre-designed but have aspects that can be customized means each project feels like a collaboration vs. someone paying me to execute their own vision
What's Your Inspiration? I like to think my work caters to the modern, stylish bride who has good style and knows what she wants. The stationery industry is incredibly saturated and brides have an overwhelming amount of options. That said, I am inspired by artists like William Morris who put their own unique spin on florals through technique and color. I also try to find inspiration outside of the graphic design world — whether it be in the woods of northern Wisconsin where my parents live or cool wallpaper in a boutique hotel. I also find anything with abundant white space or refined symmetry to be refreshing.
And Your Process? The designs available on my website are all painted and illustrated by hand (then scanned in and fine-tuned in Photoshop). All fonts, portraits and color palettes are customizable at no additional charge. I enjoy the process of collaborating with brides to ensure the designs perfectly reflect the wedding they are planning. Upon paying a deposit, I ask brides to send over any inspiration they may have including photo references, color swatches, fonts, etc. I take all of these details into account when working on the first proofs. Couples then have the opportunity to provide feedback. Then we work through two rounds of revisions to make sure every aspect of the design and wording is perfect. My stationery is available in a variety of card stocks including a double-thick linen texture as well as a super luxe 100% cotton option.
