SHELLY + ANNA
It was a random Friday night and my roommate Chloe dragged me to this improv comedy show in Chelsea. Her friend was performing with 7 other girls. Anna was one of those seven girls. She walked out on stage and that was it. Chloe hit me and pointed before I could even verbalize what was going through my head. I bought her a dirty martini at the after party and the rest is history.
Anna is the queen of cool and makes me laugh until my stomach hurts. Everyone that I have ever dated questioned or tried to change things about me. Anna listens to my ideas and appreciates all of me. Sometimes I come up with the craziest activity to do and present it to her. All she ever asks is "What time are we leaving?"
On our first date we walked out of the bar and into the middle of the street. We were waiting for the light to change and I spun her around and kissed her. It was right then in that very moment that I knew that I would never let her go. The first time we said “I love you,” we were sitting on my bed and she was playing guitar. She looked at me and said it. We were on the same page from the very beginning.
I've told Anna that I was going to marry her since the beginning. I used to buy those 25 cent rings and give them to her and say "one day, it's going to be real."
On our 2 year anniversary, we planned a trip to Puerto Rico. The day we left, I took Anna on what would have been our proper first date. We went to brunch and bowling. Then in the afternoon I took Anna to the bar where we had our first date.
Before we entered, I stopped in the middle of the street where we had our first kiss, pulled out the plastic 25 cent case with the ring in it, got down on one knee, and said "I told you one day it would be real." She said yes and we walked across the street into the bar where we had our first date and 25 of our closest friends were waiting in the bar with champagne.
We celebrated for a few hours then I had a car pick us up and take us to the airport where we had 5 days to celebrate together in Puerto Rico.
We got married in Vieques, Puerto Rico. The venue was this giant 8 acre property with a beautiful old 1940s Caribbean style carriage house. The weather was 80's sunny and beautiful. We had 100 guests.
The reception was wild - most of our guests ended up in the pool. We had a white party so there was nothing to hide. Our fathers walked us both down the aisle. Anna's sisters sang and played The Cure's Love Song.
We had mahi-mahi, sweet potato mash, beef tenderloin, quinoa, shrimp, jerk chicken, all Caribbean inspired and delicious. Our guests stayed all night - everyone was on the dance floor or in the pool. We extended our stay and had a mini moon. This year we are traveling the EVERYWHERE. I’m calling it our honeymoon year.
