Denise + Charlie

The fedex guy rang our doorbell mid-ceremony

Charlie and I met when he was working at an advertising agency that I joined in 2013. Even though we did not work on the same team, our desks were randomly placed next to each other. I thought he would hate me because I was loud or obnoxious and always had team members coming to my desk. We immediately became friends and stayed that way for over a year before we started dating.

I'm not sure that we ever had a real first date. We went out as friends for a while before we decided that we liked each other enough to kiss goodbye! I realized that Charlie was the one a couple of months into dating. He took me on a trip for my birthday and aside from being the most romantic trip I have ever been on, one night, he agreed that going back to our little villa with a bottle of champagne would be more fun than going to the local bar.  We also saw a shooting star that night—a first for both of us.

One of our first dates was at a restaurant in our neighborhood called Olea. So when he proposed, he took me there on a random Tuesday night. I didn't think too much of it at first, but then he asked the waiter for the table that we sat in on that date and I thought maybe something was up. The dinner went by with no occasion. But when we got home, he said "let's go to the roof". He asked me to marry him there and popped a bottle of Lambrusco.

The morning of the wedding we walked the dog and had coffee. I had makeup and hair done around 1 PM and then our families showed up shortly thereafter.

The ceremony was at our house, in front of our fireplace. Charlie's brother Andrew was the officiant and best man, my cousin Gissel was the Maid Of Honor and our parents, photographer, wedding planner and dog Otis were the only other attendees. My dad walked me down the aisle to Nina Simone's “Feeling Good”. Charlie and I wrote our own vows and Otis sat at our feet the entire time we read them. I think the craziest moment of the day was when the fedex guy rang our doorbell mid-ceremony! It turned out to be a wedding gift from one of our friends.

Our reception venue was at The Green Building in Gowanus. We loved it so much, we never checked out any other venues. There was SO much dancing and ZERO formalities. Our menu choice was Dominican Food and British food, like tostones, rice & beans, pastelitos, shepherd's pie, pasties, fish & chips. There were no assigned seating, we didn't do the weird bouquet throwing thing and we danced all night. Around 11:30 I took off my Manolos and put on sneakers.
