Lakin + Lindsey
Lindsey and I met in my hometown of Riverside, California. We had a lot in common and began a long-standing friendship. When we met, there seemed to be a very instant connection between the two of us.
Since we were friends for so long, we skipped past what most people would consider the “getting to know you” type dates and jumped right into a committed relationship.
I told Linds I loved her long before we were ever in a relationship. There was no special circumstance surrounding it, just that I felt that she needed to know.
A part of me knew that she was “the one” very early in our friendship. We had a long, hard fought road getting to the place where we could be in a relationship. I had a lot of issues with my background in the church; like so many Christians who come out as LGBT+. It took much patience on her part and much inner conflict resolution on my part to get to a place where I decided to follow my heart and be with her. When we finally got to that point, I knew she was the one I wanted to commit my life to.
We were together a little more than two years before I proposed on Christmas Day. I recorded a song that I wrote for her and I sent the song to her on Christmas along with the lyrics inscribed on paper. Without her knowing (and with the great help of her family!) I flew up to Washington where her parent's lived and timed my surprise so that as she listened to and read the song, I was waiting for downstairs. We got married at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point, California. Our day ended up being next to perfect but we had quite the scare in the final days leading up to it! About a week before, we not only started to see reports of rain, but thunderstorms & lightning! We ended up having to move the entire wedding up three hours and I am amazed to say that all of our 125+ guests and vendors were able to make it.
We both walked down the aisle with our fathers to another one of our favorite songs, “Take The World” by Johnnyswim. We both decided that we would write our vows — they were short and sweet. We decided we just wanted each of our two siblings to be in our wedding party.
Our musical connection gave us the best and most unexpected moments of our ceremony. Lindsey surprised me, mid-ceremony, by having our fantastic singer/songwriter friend Justin Young sing one of our favorite songs aptly titled, “My Favorite”. I surprised Linds with a performance during the reception of her favorite Stevie Wonder song, “As”.
We had my talented cousin, who is a chef, create a gourmet taco truck inspired menu. Which included filet mignon and chicken chile verde tacos, a homemade salsa bar, and watermelon infused water.
We made it a point to have a DJ so that people could dance and have a great time.
