Mae + Bryna
The first time we met it was at a neighborhood bar. We locked eyes and it was electric. We kissed by the third hour. The date lasted 34 days straight after that. We both knew the other was "the one" right away. Two weeks later, we blurted it out at the same time.
A year into our relationship, we were on a ski trip in Aspen, eating at fancy restaurant. Suddenly, Bryna asked me to dance and we walked into a nearby gazebo. Then I asked her to sit down and I got down on a knee. I just started bawling. We cried the whole way through it.
We had our wedding at Clark's Cove Farm and Inn which is an apple orchard in South Bristol, Maine. There were roughly 110 guests. We wanted a big party with everyone from around the world that we loved. We got exactly that. Not too big, not too intimate; just right. Both of my parents walked me down the aisle to Beach Boys - "God Only Knows". Bryna walked with her mom to a cover of "Sea of Love" by Cat Power.
We both wrote our own vows, I think it's incredibly important to write down why you want to marry someone and be with them forever. We didn't share them with each other until the day of. I had felt certain that marrying Bryna was the right idea, but hearing her vows made my heart swell to a whole new level.
We didn't do a traditional wedding party. We wanted our friends to be free to enjoy themselves without worrying about a schedule or added jobs. Our best friends ended up helping us in amazing ways regardless.
A family friend runs an oyster farm out of Damariscotta, and he gifted us 300 oysters for the day. We shucked those puppies right after the ceremony. For dinner we did a traditional lobster bake with lobster, corn, baked potatoes, steamers, and onions. We also had fried chicken, and all kinds of veggie sides and gluten free options.
There was lots of dancing. We had mostly oldies or gnarly high school dance songs like Missy Elliot "Get Ya Freak On". Everyone was boogyin' down, young and old. Our first dance was to Elvis' "Fools Rush In". Both of our niece's were strapped in baby backpacks with sound canceling headphones on while my friend Stephanie was in the corner freak dancing a structural column. It got wild.
